Interesting speaker tomorrow (thurs.)

Hello faculty,

Just a reminder, the Aaron Hughes lecture is tomorrow (thursday) at 12:15 in Alfond Auditorium in the MFA.

Please encourage your students to attend. Aaron is a very smart, powerful speaker and a young artist students may be able to relate to. I've talked to some of you who have students who are vets. Aaron requested that we reach out to any students vets as he would like to work with them.

It's free and open to the public, but students do need to grab a free ticket at the Fenway entrance on their way in.

Thank you so much,

Steve

Text and Image Arts welcomes:

Aaron Hughes

Aaron Hughes is an artist, Iraq War veteran, and lead organizer with Iraq Veterans Against The War.

Aaron is available to meet with students and do a workshop during his visit. He asked us to specifically welcome any students who may be veterans or family of veterans. If you are interested, please email steve.lambert@smfa.edu

Aaron Hughes served in the Illinois Army National Guard from 2000 to 2006 and was deployed for fifteen months to "Operation Iraqi Freedom" in 2003/2004 with the 1244th Transportation Company from North Riverside, IL. On his return he began to use art as a tool to confront issues of dehumanization, militarism, and occupation. In 2009 he received an MFA in Art Theory and Practice from Northwestern University. Today Aaron is the curator and chair of the Art Committee at the National Veterans Art Museum and Organizing Team Leader for Iraq Veterans Against the War, where he has worked on such projects as Warrior Writers, Combat Paper, Drawing For Peace, Operation First Casualty, Winter Soldier, the Demilitarized University, and Operation Recovery.

Subject: Internship Opportunity
To: bonnie.donohue@smfa.edu

Dear Professor Donohue:

I am hoping you can help me find a student-photographer who might be interested in an internship/work-study opportunity with our non-profit. This is great opportunity for a student who is looking to build his/her portfolio by working with us. We are looking for someone who will provide services to support our marketing efforts and events. The photographer will take pictures of all of College Bound’s programs to be used in the organization’s annual report, website and collateral and will also be available to take day of photos for fundraising and marketing events throughout the year. The photographer will be employed as a contractor and work under the direct supervision of the Director of Development. College Bound Dorchester will provide photo credit on all collateral. This is a great opportunity to showcase work and contribute to College Bound’s mission—to equip Dorchester student with the attitude, skills and experience to graduate from college (www.collegebounddorchester.org). Rate of pay will be $25/hour, with an estimated 20-30 hours available throughout the year. Additional hours may be available.

I am most grateful for any help or suggestions you can provide.

Best,

Manuela

Assignment

Next week in class we will be learning about various flashes.
I would like you to bring in 3-4 found photos of artificial lighting that interests you.
Bring your cameras so you can shoot in class.
This week's shooting assignment is a reprieve! Shoot photographs
of anything you feel strongly about, in a style that interests you.
Also, don't forget to bring your one found photo-that means everyone.

found artist interview channel

hello everyone! I have found this new website which has a lot of interviews from artists! I have found that i don't know all the artists off the website which interested me a lot in comparison to other websites which focus on well-known artists. It has some really cool artists, mainly all photography i believe, and they're pretty well done but they are very casual.

Tomorrow Nov. 9

Hi All,
We will be going to Mass Art at 3:15 to LOOK at the 20x24 camera.
In the morning we will watch the video on Shelby Lee Adams work and work ethics.
I will also do some explaining about on-camera flash, etc. Once that is clearly understood we can move on to the Jack Rabbit and studio strobes.
I am also looking at as many cheap underwater cameras as I can find.
Here is my plan: Everyone will get a different camera. I hope. We will see which camera works best and people can look at the different aesthetics and choose which model they would like to use. I hope to have all the cameras by next weds.
In the meantime look at this photographer's work for technique ideas.
see next post.

pic for today

Here is my image for today's class. It is a self portrait. I took many of my facebook profile pictures and somehow turned them into a sphere. This reminded me of flowers so then somehow this was created.

IMPORTANT-About the assignment

It is okay to do this assignment by combining your photos with found photos.
It can combine black and white with color, different scales and processes.
But, the image must look "unified".
Questions?

ASSIGNMENT for next week

Create a grid of photographs "as if" you were using the Gigapan.
It is okay to use photos from different times and places.
You can shoot using different size lenses, etc.
But, the whole thing needs to work together as one large image.
I would like you to print out the images.
Please print them out at least 24 hours before class so they outgas.
OK to print at Walgreens, etc. If you can't afford it then we will look at the computer screen.
But, it seems that this assignment would look good as prints.

TUESDAY'S GIGAPAN LECTURE and DEMO

Anne will be giving a demonstration of how she uses the Gigapan robot and software to construct her landscapes after her lecture. Interested students and faculty can come to the demo that will happen around 2pm in the Main Building. We will first meet in B010 and, weather permitting, then go to The Fenway. If it is raining she will set up a shot inside.
Class, as you know, if you work inside I cannot come. Even if you do work outside, when you go inside to download onto the computer with the Gigapan software, I cannot be there. Hopefully some of you will be present to be able to talk to the rest of the class about the process on wednesday.
Anne will be visiting our class 9-10:30 on wednesday.

Movie night discussion!

Some of you today were talking about having a movie night so we could watch the films recommended in class today.  Add comments here to discuss that, where to meet, who can get which films, and so on.  If we want to do it at school we may be able to use B311 if there's no class, otherwise we can see who's house/apartment is best for viewing.

Cool,

James

Only two absences are allowed, one excused and one not. The excused absence must be accompanied by a note from your doctor on the doctor's stationary. Participation in critiques and completing assignments on time is required. Saying that you overslept or taking someone to the airport are not excuses. You have a 5 minute window to arrive to class on time and three late arrivals are considered one absence. Missing two classes, 12 hours, you will be dropped from the course. All cell phones must be turned off during the class except for breaks.

Each morning we start the class looking at the single images each student has brought to class, from the media, to discuss. One Last Thing!

Please look at the great photo montages of Hannah Hoch. Here is a small site with some of her work.
http://humanities.uchicago.edu/classes/readcult/
On Weds. bring scissors, glue, colored paper, fabric, etc to class. Also bring lots of scanned images to class.
We will make several LARGE wall size collages using your scanned pictures to create one or two large pieces.
So here is what you will need for class:
-A personal scanned project
- scanned body parts, human or animal
- lots of scanned images to add to class wall project
-scissors, tape, glue, fabric, wallpaper or whatever you would like to add.

HHMMM, Class Body Parts?

One last thought. If everyone wanted to scan one or more body parts and bring them to class we could also
construct/assemble some new humans to put on the wall. They could be clothed or unclothed along with other things
you might want to scan that relate to the body. This is in addition to your individual projects.

Flatbed Scanner Photographs

http://www.photo-vinc.com/articles/Flatbedscanner/Flatbedscanner.html
A simplistic introduction with some examples of using the scanner as a way to make photos.
Try to think beyond the initial impulse to just place an object on the center of the glass.
You can add colored filters to the surface of the glass, move objects during scanning,
place interesting backgrounds over your objects, etc. etc. Do not put your face in the frame.
You can place acetate or a flat piece of glass over the scanner glass so you can introduce liquid, paint, etc. into the process.
Try to think beyond beauty. Scanned objects, because of their sharpness, tend to look gorgeous.
You can pick a theme for yourself if you like.
Good luck. Have fun.
